Introduction

Implementing smart systems is a necessary long-term step but requires high upfront costs. However, with the appropriate technology, these entry barriers can be lowered, especially for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and developing countries. Smart sensors, smart communication, and analysis algorithms with less financial and technical burdens in deployment have been used in development.

First, the applicability of the ‘Safe Smart Factory’ technologies for SMEs has been confirmed by applying vision, power, temperature, and environmental monitoring sensors according to various industrial safety issues. Second, Innovative Technology and Energy Center (iTEC), an NGO in Tanzania, was established. iTEC has built four solar power plants in rural off-grid villages in Tanzania with smart grid technology, developed appropriate technologies, and provided technical training.
